Pips NYT – Challenging Domino Logic Game

Pips is the latest logic puzzle game from New York Times Games. Unlike NYT games like Wordle or Connections, Pips does not rely on vocabulary but focuses on logical thinking and arithmetic through dominoes.

Core gameplay

  • Players will place 5 (or more, depending on the difficulty level) dominoes on the board according to color conditions and symbols (such as “>3,” “<13,” “=," or the sum is equal to a certain number).
  • Each square on the board is clearly defined—the number of dominoes can be required to be greater than, less than, or equal to a specific value.
  • On the Easy level, you may need to place 4–5 dominoes; on the Hard level, you may need to use up to 16 dominoes.
  • The task is to balance and meet all the requirements correctly, similar to playing Sudoku with dominoes.

Level of play and sharing

  • Players can choose from three levels: Easy, Medium, and Hard—and can play all three levels every day. There is a timer and sharing mode, similar to Wordle, showing completion time and performance level via color coding (green – fast, red – slow, etc.).
  • However, according to some reviews, Pips may not be as simple and widespread an entertainment as Wordle, but it is appealing to those who like to challenge pure logical thinking.

History and meaning

  • Pips is the first original logic game from the NYT (other than Sudoku) and has become part of the NYT Games logic game collection.
  • Players and the community, especially from Reddit, have been eagerly awaiting Pips' return after its beta period, and many have appreciated the game's "fresh, unique, yet familiar" feel.
